The Urban Manufacturing Alliance is an amazing organization – worth joining and participating at events and webinars. UMA and the National League of Cities just released a new online publication, “Discovering Your City’s Maker Economy” https://www.urbanmfg.org/project/discovering-your-citys-maker-economy/ as a guide for building strong local economies through creative micro-business development and small-scale manufacturing. Sierra College’s partnership with Hacker Lab was featured as a best practice model, along with other initiatives in Boston, San Jose, Detroit, and Portland!
The guide lists four points for supporting local maker businesses and manufacturers:
- Create a supportive business environment for makers and manufacturers
- Drive demand for locally made and manufactured products
- Provide access to affordable and safe production spaces for makers and manufacturers
- Advocate for state policies that support makers and micro-businesses
