Sierra alumnus leading Grass Valley makerspace textile craft community

Sierra Fashion Design alumnus, Naima, spent many hours last year teaching herself to customize clothing and learn industrial sewing machines at Hacker Lab Powered by Sierra College, as well as being mentored by Sierra Makerspaces advisory members Louisa and Steve Hunter. Through Louisa and Steve’s support, a new textile lab was developed at The Curious Forge, our Grass Valley makerspace partner.  Naima was recently hired by The Curious Forge as a Program Director. She has also created a strong community of craft around textiles, with new members engaging in the space.

As an example, Laura, a Curious Forge member, was working on a garment to wear to an event the same evening.  Naima and Louisa jumped right in – Just In Time Fashion – and the dress was finished in time to wear.  Naima is teaching in the makerspace, practicing her craft through her own fashion creations, growing her small business, and supporting community engagement in The Curious Forge.   As Steve says, “Another star in our ever growing team!”
