Sacramento City College Makerspace Team meets with Congresswoman Doris Matsui

Several team members from the SCC Makerspace Team met up with our Member of Congress, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui, (6th District, California), who represents our region. She is amazing! She asked us extremely pertinent questions and expressed her desire that we succeed. She stressed the importance of STEAM, how important it was to have an accessible makerspace at this particular college, which represents a student population that is almost 70% at or below the poverty line. She also stressed our need to reach out to the social services in our community, to homeless youth, and to establish connections to the vibrant tech/art/maker communities that exist here in the region, and that we should collaborate with HackerLab. Did she read our grant proposal or what! WE WERE TOTALLY ON BOARD! One of our makerspace student rockstars, a former homeless and foster youth, and now a key member of our team, Mat Vandiver, talked directly with Congresswoman Matsui and our school president, Michael Gutierrez, about his desire to create a makerspace that would provide a gateway for the youth in our community to taste higher ed, to learn and understand that community college IS FOR THEM, and to establish pathways for them to succeed. Wow.
