Intersection of Making and Math: Yurt Prototype

Naima is a Sierra alumnus, Sierra Makerspaces team member, and an area leader in the textile space at The Curious Forge makerspace in Grass Valley.  In fall 2018, Naima and her partner began construction of a yurt.  A local yurt maker constructed the wooden skeleton and helped build the platform.  Naima fabricated the yurt cover at the Forge using an industrial walking foot sewing machine contributed by Sierra Makerspaces.  The pattern for the yurt roof was especially problematic, but was solved with the help of Sierra Math Prof. Vicki Day.

Naima’s next steps will be to develop a digital yurt pattern and post it online, along with fabrication instructions, online to DIY’ers like herself.
