Mathematics Professors Katie Lucero and Lynn Harrison-Benavidez are in their second year of integrating Making into campus community building through their “Crafternoon” professional development workshops. Using their personal experiences of learning new technology and digital design software under the CCC Maker initiative, they found that a supportive, fun and low-risk environment for new Makers is the best way to build an expanded network within the college system. In November 2019, faculty members gathered to make pumpkin centerpieces and share space with colleagues who don’t normally ‘mix’ across departments and programs. As the community of faculty grows, the word has spread and the workshops often have wait lists. In December, Lucero and Harrison-Benavidez will hold a three-day faculty Maker Camp – giving participants more time to go deeper and explore how Making can be integrated into their own teaching and learning styles.
