Engaging girls in Making: Girl Scouts USA

Girl Scouts Heart of Central California (https://www.girlscoutshcc.org/) is a significant ecosystem partner for Sierra Makerspaces and the North Region CCC Maker colleges, connecting girls to STEM/STEAM activities and pathways, and helping grow a Maker Mindset for K-12 girls.

Over the last year, GSHCC researched and fund-raised to open their own makerspace at the Sacramento headquarters.  Many partners contributed to their plan, including Sierra Makerspaces, Hacker Lab, the Exploratorium, and more. On November 8, the new makerspace was unveiled by District leadership at a grand opening ceremony for ecosystem partners. CCCMAKER representatives included Carol Pepper-Kittredge (CCC Maker project manager), Zack Dowell (Folsom Lake College Innovation Center and Advisory Member), and Yen Marshal (AT&T and Advisory Member).  A second space is under construction  in Modesto.

A sold-out opening just for girls was held on Saturday November 11.  More than 350 girls and their parents or leaders visited the space, prototyped new badges around maker skills, and experimented with making.
