Design Thinking: Environmental Awareness Project

On April 13th-15th, Golden West College conducted a Design Thinking experience at the Imaginology Fair in Orange County, California. The Applied Learning, Innovation, and Community Engagement(ALICE) Center  teamed up to create a community led Design Thinking Project. Students were initially shown an image of a polluted beach and encouraged to EMPATHIZE with the need for a clean environment. They were next asked to DEFINE the core problem of waste management. After IDEATING on possible solutions, each person was encouraged to use recycled materials from designated bins to populate the beach poster to create a recycled mosaic art piece. This community led and driven art Design Thinking Installation culminated in a pledge to keep the environment clean and beautiful for everybody to enjoy. The artwork pieces are now framed and housed in the ALICE Makerspace as an example of Design Thinking.
