CSM Library Staff Tour Jacobs Institute

CSM Makerspace Staff visited UC Berkeley’s Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation on Mar. 9, 2018 to gather ideas and inspiration from their makerspace layout and processes.

Biggest takeaways?

Involvement: Students are directly involved in making the space better. Students made the tool wall, and other elements of the space.

Safety: A cross-campus committee ensures that the makerspace meets safety standards. Training new makers is a two part process: the first part is online; the second part is in person at the Institute.

Smart design: One space is part classroom, part maker room, so that it can be used in several ways. In other spaces, equipment can be booked using a badging system. Well designed signage can remind students of settings, best practices, and protocols.

Thanks, Jacobs Institute staff, for answering all of our questions and making this such a great visit!
